If there were a drug that could so powerfully fight America’s obesity epidemic and the health implications it brings, surely every physician would be eager to prescribe it.
This is the impetus behind Club La Maison’s Exercise is Medicine™. This program was developed by The American College of Sports Medicine and supported by the American Medical Association. Club La Maison Health and Fitness is the first club in the area to open their doors to patients with a prescription from their doctor. The main objective is to encourage physicians to “prescribe” exercise during patient visits. Health care providers - especially physicians - should play a vital role in encouraging patients to get healthy.
Here are a few statistics:
- 65% of patients would be more likely to exercise if advised by their doctor and given additional resources.
- 4 out of 10 physicians talk to their patients about the importance of exercise but don’t always offer suggestions as to how to be active.
- In the US, we spend $1 out of every $10 on caring for patients with diabetes, the vast majority of whom have type 2 diabetes—a condition that can be cured or markedly improved by a regimen of regular physical activity and proper diet.
- 1 hour of exercise equals 1.95 added hour of life
Club La Maison Health and Fitness has launched this program with area cardiologists, family practitioners, and other medical specialists. The Exercise is Medicine Program at CLM gives each doctor Exercise Prescription Pads. The doctor is able to recommend exercise and provide a reputable facility where he/she can send patients to. Each patient receives a 30 day health club membership at Club La Maison. Each patient will also receive 3 personal training sessions and pre and post program testing.
CLM’s General Manager, Chris Dyer says “Our program is a wonderful way to introduce people to exercise. Exercise is preventative medicine! Our program is a fully supervised and will give the participants measureable results. Our goal is to create a healthier community through exercise”
Let us all enjoy a regular, healthy dose of exercise!
